Penang architecture style

Hi.this is simply a note for my own study.I've decided to make my thesis of architecture in my own hometown,Penang (or called by local, Pulau Pinang) and here i am!
listing some study in short for my own note which MAYBE will be beneficial to anyone whom may want to know too,OR, even those with more knowledge whom would share more or correct me.

OK!HERE it is!

Penang is simply famous for its colonial branding in architecture, or in specific, Georgetown, the town of Penang.
Well, in a lot of data, a study of Georgetown(Only) and Penang (the whole state) makes a lot of different especially in the influence of culture. So to make sure you are clear of which one to study. Georgetown was and is still the the town of Penang so it experiences more cultural exchange and influences.Penang was formally apart of kedah (more info by googling Penang history)

So,this is how penang is divided, into 5 parts and the percentage of population in each area:

Penang Division by its administrative state and population in 2010

and this is the community's race in Penang by 2010,
Penang statistic sketch pie chart by ethnic group 2010

penang race statistic (penang population by ethnic group,2010)

OK!thats abit of the statistic(of people whom live in Penang) which may have influence the architecture,
so now, the main note,PENANG ARCHITECTURE in time line.

I find it difficult to look for Penang house history somehow (well, most Penang architecture record came after the time of English Colonialism ). The early houses in Penang came in the influence of the Malays(original local),later, the chinese shophouse and the collonial english style buildings. Building style and influence  also varies building type.As for the houses,a lot of it have the Malay local influence, while shop houses (which is also a home to the Chinese on the upper level) is in influence of the Chinese and administrative buildings are  mostly in influence of European colonial style. So,

1.The Malay Houses:Traditional Penang Malay Architecture
So,early people are the Malays.Since Penang was before apart of Kedah,it may have influence also on architecture. The local originally live in an on stilt timber houses.
The traditional Malay houses in Malay

There is a bit lacking of information finding by these Malay houses so I would also share my grand parents's retreat house in Sg.Nibong,Penang because they were leaving in Georgetown back than. Its close to the sea so they some times went there to enjoy the sunset with their children..here is the picture(sorry for the blur, its to cover the identity;))

The Penang Architecture style(Penang traditional malay architecture) in Sg Nibong ,Penang 1967

**Another good example is the P.Ramlee house(rumah P.Ramlee)

(still under study:some references from a thesis report in1982 UTM:http://eprints.ptar.uitm.edu.my/1345/1/JOHAN_BIN_ABDUL_85_24.pdf)

2.Shop houses
A lot of helpful references may be found regarding this especially after Penang is awarded as UNESCO world heritage in site such as : http://penangshophouse.blogspot.com/ and alot of helpful reference from ARTS-ed and GTWHI.

After the time of the traditioanl Malay architecture, came more influence into the local architecture with the Indian and chinese architecture and happen to have alot of cultural exchange.

15 august:mak nen meningal dunia.innalillah.

bila org kata nasi dah jadi bubur.sekarang mairah paham perasaan tu.no joke.

life is short.if you have something that you wish to do,do it (NOW).if you have something to say,say it!
if you WISH TO MEET somebody.meet them right away!

i remember once mak nen says to me before we went to KL.."dah habis ni,ingat2 la melawat kami, paling-paling kalaw sibuk, nanti mak nen meningal, jenguk lah"  and at that time i was like"apa mak nen dok cakap mcm ni!"
i have never  though that what she told me will be so soon!ajal ditangan tuhan.;(

if it wasn't because of fate ,i would even know her(mak nen) existence even by today. it all started with our architecture heritage study 2010.Years before that, we've planed to have our heritage study in Thailand, but happen to have riot only a month before we went there.since things get worsen in Thailand,we decided to join in the Malaysian group to Kuala Kangsar. And there in Kuala Kangsar, by chance,we get to do measurement for rumah pak meor just opposite Masjid ubudiah Kuala Kangsar and Bytul Anwar( abandoned house opposite the ubudiah mosque).Mak nen was the wife of Pak Meor. I remember how gentel she was, kind and motherly even when we were new to them. Alwas, when the clock strikes elleven(morning)...we will all have to stop all the work and eat some food prepared by her(its family time!);).
and time when she would still smile when we was having stomach ache (and how she was so afraid of going to hospital for check up).

we all love you mak nen. i will always remember your warm hug.
may allah love her even more and repay all her good deeds.especially in this month of ramadhan.;)
it all remain as memories now.until we meet again someday.al fatihah.

WHAT TO DO FOR MY ARCHITECTURE THESIS!?helppp!

http://www.fab.utm.my/Current-StudentProject-BatuMaung.html
is a site thats inspiring to start my thesis?its in Peneng!!how about rejuvenating the heritage landscape to add cultural value to be surrendered to the community? how about saving a small peace of the city for the memorial of peneng.to remind the locals on how it used to be,giving the feeling that we have all missed out, a place to call you back to your home town -peneng? landscape that wont lie and will not make you confiused on where you are-fruit trees and paddy?A place that may ease the racial sensitivity and a place that can be enjoyed by whom ever-the people of peneng!

20 june 2011 is date to remember by some:Allah called(ayah hana meninggal)

only a day after father's day.who will expect the lost of her father?and today, someone did lost her father.innalillah.

Having someone you used to talk to, chat with, a person who’s very important to a friend passed away is not that easy to accept. Indeed very shocking news. The news was very sudden and I was taken aback when I received the message. Today a sister’s friend, Hanna Saffi lost her father due to a massive heart attract (I believe).was a very shocking news. It was 4am in the morning when we get the news. Her dad was a very nice man and young.Who will expect that any way?but Allah knows better. And she is too very close to his father (still remember times when syifa told us she cried hardly when she have to stay in the UPM hostel away from the family and her dad pick her up directly-and days when we can hear her laugh hardly chatting to his father through skype while we were chat to syifa through skype too)
This news will definitely be her life’s most difficult experiences. i would not even be able to imagine that happens to me.She must be so much stronger. Wouldn't be able to even think how much you will miss a father soo much when you dont even have the chance to see him for the very last time,to listen to his voice and listen to what he have to say. I have no idea how to help or what to say, specially to her family when we visited,So nothing is said or done, for fear of saying the wrong thing. We pray and witness the grief while feeling helpless.
But i wish her to stay strong, for as far as what remain for her father is prayers from his children.
Doesn't matter if they cried. Crying never hurt anyone and when the tears stop, just like the rain, I hope the sun will shine again. This will be the time when friends are needed the most. be there for her, console her but remember that you both  have exams around the conner too.struggle with many frightening emotions is too may be rough for her.But to Have someone to lean on can maybe help her through it. Now, more than ever, your support is needed. simply be there to help them cope with the pain

“Semoga Allah membesarkan pahalamu dan kesabaranmu dan semoga Allah memberimu penggantinya.”

ni mairah terbaca::

Comments to avoid when comforting the bereaved

  • "I know how you feel." One can never know how another may feel. You could, instead, ask your friend to tell you how he or she feels.
  • "It's part of God's plan." This phrase can make people angry and they often respond with, "What plan? Nobody told me about any plan."
  • "Look at what you have to be thankful for." They know they have things to be thankful for, but right now they are not important.
  • "He's in a better place now." The bereaved may or may not believe this. Keep your beliefs to yourself unless asked.
  • "This is behind you now; it's time to get on with your life." Sometimes the bereaved are resistant to getting on with because they feel this means "forgetting" their loved one. In addition, moving on is easier said than done. Grief has a mind of its own and works at its own pace.
  • Statements that begin with "You should" or "You will." These statements are too directive. Instead you could begin your comments with: "Have you thought about. . ." or "You might. . ."

asal bukan Babi semua benda org kita nak pelahap

HA!!ni cerita org melayu kita ok.memang tak patot.memang tak de pendirian. tak cool la kalaw orang nak lepak2 tiba2 kau sorang je nak buat2 alim tanya"betul ke kedai ni halal?" alah..tak kisah la halal haram stakat sikit2,bukan mabuk ke apa pun..kedai tu nama deris ke devis ke(tulisan nama kedai tu mengkonfiuskan),ke kedai hindu (yang tak sah halal) dgn kedai mamak macam sama je kan? alah..aku nampak je orang kerja dia pakai tudong..ada gantung tulisan jawi2..mesti la halal kan?sijil halal alah malas lah..OK.SALAH. da byk kedai yang tak halal buat mcm tu nk tarik pelangan.

ha!yang kerajaan kita pulak da baguih dah cek sana cek sini bwk kuar newspaper " fishball didapati ada kandungan &% babi" atau "jus buah didapati terkemuka didapati ada kandungan alkohol" atau kedai sah halal didapati menjual fishball yang ada tak halal semua bukan nya nak bg taw kita produk apa.kedai yang mana?orang kita memang best mula2 buat2 muka terkejut ..geleng2 sikit lps tu pi la plahap balik macam tak cukup makan. The latest teknik pek2 la tulisan jawi2 kat balkang produk ka, baner kedai ka konon2 macam produk islam tapi helah2 kafir ni.kita pon OH!halal ni.

kenapa botol air jus2 nak kena ala2 botol beer gitu??style lah?lepas gian?tak dapat beer buat2 feel beer pon jadik la..tau kan haram jugak?lama2 da biasa dgn jus tu beer tu jd no hal lah.Jadi yang da terkena ni konon2 halal, ada tulisan jawi adalah minuman ala2 beer Barbican yang kat masjid pon ada jual, uia pon jual, dgn kandungan alkohol. tapi memang da selamat la masuk perut banyak orang...ikea pon haram2 samak2 tp da masuk perut..tu yang kita tau..byk lagi yang tak tau...sbb tu hati kita makin gelap..kadang2 kita tau..oh..buat benda2 dosa salah tp kita terbuat jugak, tak sembahyang dosa tp berat nya nak pegi...taw tak taw, we are what we eat.jadi tengok2 la sikit apa yang kita makan tu..mc, kat the garden tu(restaurant) dah terdedah masak dengan alkohol,tp ramai yang dah makan..pekerja dia memang la bertudung kan tapi.fikir2 la sebelum makan..orang kita ni memang ramai sgt suka ambil ringan benda2 macam ni.mcm mana nak maju.aish.

Santai Restaurant TTDI BAD food service

Disappointing.

Keep in mind that, the customer, is always right!
This is not our first time to Santai restaurant TTDI and in fact, we ARE a GERULAR customer!
And this time it’s the worst mistake Santai may have made and this have definitely bring a strong perception to us whenever we mention Santai.
We went for lunch at 1. It’s a wrong timing for them to make this mistake especially when we don’t even have our breakfast yet! Hungry people get angry easily!
We waited until 1.35 now...more than half an hour, we ordered meehoon soup and keitiaw goring assuming it will be the fastest .from an empty restaurant to full, even people who came later gets their food ,we starts wondering. why is the service too slow? We never even demand to be treated better as a regular customer, but at least treat us fairly. When we asked the waitress either pretend they don’t see or node pretend to ask something in the kitchen but no action really taken! What is up with this? did they lost the order sheet?
OK. Fair enough if they could have apologized and make it soon but not even a word to show they are sorry. In fact, they respond back that pririority should be given to those whom ordered dish with rise? Santai restaurant and management, I am very-very disappointed with you. Please improve your service if you don’t wish to lose more regular customer like us. Learn well to apologize to keep them with you. Thank you.
